By the time he was released in January 1848, his mana and that of his tribe had diminished. The British built a stockade not far from Te Rauparaha’s pā. The campaign to pacify the region now switched its focus to Te Rangihaeata and his positions in the nearby Pāuatahanui inlet.

Te Rauparaha (c.1768 – 27 November 1849) was a Māori rangatira (chief) and war leader of the Ngāti Toa tribe who took a leading part in the Musket Wars, receiving the nickname "the Napoleon of the South". He was influential in the original sale of land to the New Zealand Company and was a participant in the Wairau Affray in Marlborough.
